Category: Shooting!

A good day at the range.

One of my roles in life is as a “Firearms Evangelist”. My goal is to show people that guns aren’t bad, and can really be a fun activity. It was my privilege to take a brand new shooter (and a helper) this Saturday for an informal “intro to firearms” class of sorts. With a heavy focus on safety and range procedures we covered and demonstrated about 20 handguns of various calibers, and a few rifles.

This is my 30th or so new shooter that I’ve taken out, and its a great feeling to be part of it. 22Lr almost always wins the favorite game, which is a great option.

FedEx arrived before we left, and brought me a long awaited present. http://www.xs-products.com fully-encased-alloy-50-round-drum-magazine-for-the-ar15 Loaded it up, and it ran like a champ, very solid build.

A little shooting with the guys

Went out with some folks to practice a little, and it broke out into a little competition shooting steel plates. Things were tight, back and forth between Ben and myself, till I put the smack down with this run. This took the record from low 7s, down to low 4s. “Boom! 4.18”

Clear out some 45acp brass

Ben and I hit the range today to throw some lead down range. This was his first visit to Volusia County Gun and Hunt club, and I introduced him to the fun of steel plates.

At one point we ran my 1911 till it was so hot you couldn’t hold on to it…

He took some video of me proving I need more practice. To be fair, my Glock had just bit me, and I was bleeding while doing this. I should stick with the 1911. My trusty 686 really let me down today, its going to visit Bruce at The AWPeterson Gunshop for its 20 year tuneup, I guess.

A little shooting time on a Sunday morning.

Took two of my projects out for some range time today… Got one doing well, the other must be female, because she ain’t cooperating. Not sure if its optics or ammo, and since I’m about 18 rounds till E on the ammo supply, I’ll have to wait two weeks for the next ammo order to go find out more.

Saturday quick stop at the range

Stopped today to sight in a new set of optics of the 300 Blackout rifle, got it done, but realized I don’t like the setup, so I’ve ordered some new rings and hope I’ll like those better. Did get it walked in centered, as you can see… This is a total of 7 shots, one of the centers doesn’t show up well.

This was with Gunn Ammo 130 grain, I’ve read reviews that seemed hit and miss, but I’d say I had pretty good success with it. Even with my out of the bag LPK trigger.

Here piggy piggy

Managed to find time today to take a couple new toys/presents out to the Strickland Gun Range today.   Good times.  Got to share some toys with random strangers who were there for their first trip.  A father and son there for the son’s first trip with his new Ruger 10/22 he got for Christmas.  It was good to see the look on his face when I handed him a suppressed AR15 in 22LR to plink with.  If our sport is to flourish, we need to be friendly and encouraging to new shooters.

Took my possible hog hunting rifle out to sight in, and run a few rounds to make sure its working.  It worked out well. I hope to have a 300AAC Blackout for hogs, but this will do the job without any trouble.

Here piggy piggy, I’ve got some corn for you…
