I'm old, and I've been shooting and reloading since I was about 7.
I started depriming and sizing brass for my father with a RCBS rock chucker press (which I still have) have now primarily use a Dillon 1050, and several Dillon 550b(s)

I have been a shooter/member of IDPA and IPSC, though I'm not current, and I have not been to a competition in quite some time.

Lately I've been into shot shell reloading, and trap shooting.

Concerned I might not be shooting this newest rifle build as much as I’d like, I finally caved in and purchased some components to “roll my own”. This will get me at least 500 to get started.

Factory ammo best case seems to be about 60cents per round.

Cost to make it myself:

Primed Remington brass – $.26
Sierra Match King 125 grain – $.32
18.5 grains of H110 – $.05

Total cost for first load – $.63

Primer – $.028

Total cost for reload – $.378

I’m sure I could get the price down using a cheaper bullets, but this is what I’m doing for the first go round, we’ll chrono them and see how they perform

Where oh where is my 300 blackout ammo?

Its been a month now since I got my 300 blackout upper. I picked up 100 rounds of ammo at the same time, regular factory ammo was hard to find or expensive, or both. I ended up with Gunn Ammo from GA. It used 300 blackout headstamp brass, and seemed to be ok, though other reviews I’ve read weren’t so nice. I’ve had an order in with Midway for 3 weeks, and the backorder date has been pushed out 4 times. It was supposed to ship yesterday 2/12/12, but I checked in to see it pushed out to 3/22/12. It scares me that Midway has so little a clue when product is actually coming in, but it really bothers me that this round that everyone under the sun is making parts for, could be so hard to find loaded ammo for. If I wanted to spend 1.50 a round, I’ll just go take my .308 out and get the job done, but I don’t. I don’t even have enough brass to justify a dies to load it.

I’d prefer 300aacblackout headstamps, just because thats how I am.

Took two of my projects out for some range time today… Got one doing well, the other must be female, because she ain’t cooperating. Not sure if its optics or ammo, and since I’m about 18 rounds till E on the ammo supply, I’ll have to wait two weeks for the next ammo order to go find out more.

Saturday quick stop at the range

Stopped today to sight in a new set of optics of the 300 Blackout rifle, got it done, but realized I don’t like the setup, so I’ve ordered some new rings and hope I’ll like those better. Did get it walked in centered, as you can see… This is a total of 7 shots, one of the centers doesn’t show up well.

This was with Gunn Ammo 130 grain, I’ve read reviews that seemed hit and miss, but I’d say I had pretty good success with it. Even with my out of the bag LPK trigger.

Another weekend with no shooting.

Spent all weekend working on things, and missed all my chances to go shoot the new rifle. I even found a set of BUPS for this rifle since I haven’t picked optics yet.

I guess I’ll spend some more time this weekend cleaning the reloading room up a little, and reading to find what set of dies I want to end up with to load for this beast.

I’ve been talking about it for about 5 or 6 weeks now, I’ve priced 6 different options to get it and 3 different ways to build it. The prices were all over the board, but I finally managed to find the option I was comfortable with, and pulled the trigger (figuratively) so that I pull the trigger (literally)

I’ve also ordered a bare barrel as well, and I plan to build a 2nd upper from scratch, just for fun.

I picked the AAC model for a variety of reasons. I plan to suppress this soon using AAC’s suppressor, and this as a package gives a known result. The AAC stuff is the original, I love that the rail is a Knights Armament, since I thought I’d never own ANYTHING they made, and they are a “local” Florida company. Fit and finish seems fantastic, I’m eager to get it out there and see how it does.

Now I just need to buy some optics!
